Catarman N.Samar—House Speaker Martin Romualdez, in a luncheon hosted on June 29, 2023, formally announced the granting of a 25 million assistance from the national government to the Province of Northern Samar. Governor Edwin Ongchuan, along with other governors, congressmen, and other leaders from Eastern Visayas, expressed their gratitude for the significant aid.
The generous cash assistance will be allocated to various programs aimed at helping the less fortunate citizens of Northern Samar. Through its the Assistance for Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will extend support to those facing dire circumstances. This will ensure the provision of immediate aid to vulnerable individuals and families in need.
Additionally, the Department of Health (DOH) will utilize a portion of the grant to provide Medical Assistance to Indigent and Financially-Incapacitated Patients (MAIP). This initiative will help alleviate the financial burden faced by marginalized residents when seeking necessary medical treatment.
Recognizing the impact of economic challenges faced by the Province of Northern Samar, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will also contribute to the funding by implementing the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program. This endeavor will assist workers who have been negatively affected by various economic factors, such as job displacement or disadvantageous working conditions.
The luncheon gathering served as a platform for Speaker Romualdez to formally announce the grant and discuss its specific allotted amounts for each program. Governor Ongchuan, on behalf of Northern Samar Province, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the national government’s support during these challenging times.
